Butterflies in Love with Flowers

Inspired by the plate with chrysanthemum patterns from the reign of Yongzheng (1723-1735), a gift from Saiman Ernawan to Peranakan Museum. Suns Singapore applies contemporary porcelain-making and painting techniques to transform this cultural collection into a fashionable model, reviving the timelessness of famille rose and the naturalistic style of Master Yun Shouping. 

The artist employs a gentle and delicate brushstroke to reproduce a derivative of the Qing Yongzheng period's museum collection — the Chrysanthemum Plate. The inspiration is drawn from the naturalistic style of the flower-and-bird paintings by expert artist Yun Shouping (1633-1690). Butterflies in the insect world are known for their fidelity, with each butterfly having only one mate in its lifetime. Chrysanthemums symbolize elegance, purity, auspiciousness, longevity, and a quiet and detached life. The combination of butterflies and chrysanthemums complements each other, representing the Peranakan community's sense of responsibility and faith towards love, marriage, and family. Suns Singapore, using modern porcelain-making techniques and substituting floral paper for hand-painted famille rose, has created more daily-use porcelain derivatives while preserving the cultural essence of classic Peranakan porcelain.
