The Peranakan community has always adhered to traditional Chinese family values, advocating the division of roles with the husband as the breadwinner and the wife as the homemaker. Generally, the mistress of the house, or the Nyonya, manages household affairs. The phoenix symbolizes the Nyonya in charge, representing both the person responsible for household matters and a nostalgic connection to the homeland.
